Valve Clearance Adjustment
- With engine cold, remove valve covers. Place No. 1 cylinder on TDC of compression stroke. Ensure lifters on No. 1 cylinder are loose and lifters on No. 6 cylinder are tight. If not, turn crankshaft clockwise one complete revolution.
- Using feeler gauge, measure and record clearance of intake valves on No. 1 and No. 4 cylinders and exhaust valves on No. 1 and No. 5 cylinders. Rotate crankshaft 2/3 turn (240 degrees). Measure and record clearance of intake valves on No. 3 and No. 5 cylinders and exhaust valves on No. 3 and No. 6 cylinders.
- Rotate crankshaft another 2/3 turn (240 degrees). Measure and record clearance of intake valves on No. 2 and No. 6 cylinders and exhaust valves on No. 2 and No. 4 cylinders. If clearance is not within specification, change adjusting shim to adjust valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (COLD) table.VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (COLD)
Valve In. (mm) Intake .006-.010 (.15-.25) Exhaust .008-.012 (.20-.30) - To remove adjusting shim, depress valve lifter with Lifter Depressor (09248-55010 A and B). Before depressing lifter, position notch on depressor toward spark plug. Use small screwdriver to remove shim from top of lifter.
- Measure thickness of shim removed with a micrometer. If valve clearance is greater than specified, use thicker shim. If valve clearance is less than specified, use thinner shim. Adjusting shims are available in .002" (.05 mm) increments ranging from .0984" (2.500 mm) to .1299" (3.299 mm). Install new shims using lifter depressor.
