Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove right seat. Remove engine service cover. Drain coolant. Disconnect hoses from radiator, heater outlet, brake booster, fuel inlet and outlet, and charcoal canister.
  2. Remove hose from air cleaner. Remove power steering pump (if equipped). Disconnect accelerator cable and bracket from throttle body.
  3. Disconnect wire connectors from coolant temperature sending unit, oil pressure switch, Integrated Ignition Assembly (IIA), A/C compressor, idle-up solenoid, and Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV).
  4. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect 3 connectors at transmission. Disconnect coolant temperature switch, alternator, airflow meter, and solenoid resistor connectors.
  5. Remove fan shroud. Remove fan clutch with fan and pulley. Remove driver's door pillar cover. Remove driver's seat belt retractor and cover. Disconnect Electronic Control Unit (ECU) connectors. Remove 4 air conditioning compressor mounting bolts. Remove compressor and secure out of way.
  6. Raise and support vehicle about 40" off floor. Drain crankcase. Remove drive shaft. Remove exhaust pipe. Remove transmission control selector, shift cable(s), and clutch release cylinder.
  7. Remove starter wiring. Remove starter. Disconnect speedometer cable. Disconnect back-up light connector. Disconnect transfer case indicator light (if equipped). Disconnect rear heater mode select and air mix cable at damper (if equipped). Disconnect rear heater hose connections.
  8. Disconnect heater outlet hose. Disconnect cable from engine mounts. Remove lower engine cover. On automatic transmission equipped models, disconnect oil cooler lines.
  9. Remove stabilizer bar. Remove stabilizer bar bracket from lower control arm. Scribe alignment marks on strut bar-to-strut bar rear nut. Remove strut bar from lower control arm. Support front and rear of engine. See Fig 1.
  10. Remove engine mounts from body. See Fig 2. Lower engine and transmission. Remove engine mounting member from engine. Remove transmission from engine. To install engine, reverse removal procedure.
