Rear Axle Bearings R & I: Installation

  1. On models with semi-floating axles, drive bearing and new oil seal into housing. Coat lip of seal with grease. On models with full floating axles, pack bearings and inner walls of hub with multipurpose grease. Install new seal and place hub with bearings on axle housing. Position lock plate with protrusion in axle housing groove.
  2. Install adjusting nut with Spanner (09509-25011) to torque of 43 ft. lbs. (58 N.m). Rotate hub several times to seat bearings. Retighten adjusting nut to specification. Loosen adjusting nut until hand tight. Retighten until preload (starting torque), at wheel stud is .2-3.3 lbs. (.09-1.50 kg.).
  3. Align one axle housing slot with any one adjusting nut slot. Install lock screws into holes which are at right angles to aligned slots. Tighten lock screws to 35-60 INCH lbs. (4.0-6.8 N.m). Recheck starting preload. Install rear axle shaft.
