Case Disassembly (Conventional)
- Before disassembling differential, check tooth contact pattern, ring gear runout (measured at back of gear in 4 places), ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash and total drive preload. Record readings. Loosen staked portion of pinion shaft nut. Remove nut.
- Using flange puller, remove pinion flange. Remove oil seal, bearing and slinger. Record position and number of shims removed during disassembly. Mark left and right side bearing caps for reassembly reference. Remove adjusting nut lock bolts. Remove side bearing caps and adjusting nuts.NOTE: Mark all left and right side bearing components for reassembly reference.
- Remove differential case assembly with side bearings. Remove drive pinion and mount in holder. Using puller, remove rear pinion bearing. Press out front and rear pinion bearing outer races. Remove side bearings from differential case.
- Index ring gear to case. Remove ring gear bolt lock plates and bolts. Remove ring gear. Tap ring gear from case using a soft faced hammer (if necessary). On 2-pinion differentials, remove pinion gear shaft retaining pin. Drive out gear shaft. Remove pinion gears, side gears and thrust washers.
- On 4-pinion differentials, index differential case cover to case. Remove cover attaching bolts. Remove pinion gears, spider, side gears and thrust washer(s).
