Removal - RWD Corolla Wagon

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect transmission throttle cable from carburetor linkage and remove cable from bracket. Disconnect neutral safety switch, back-up light switch and overdrive relay connectors located near starter.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission. Index mark and remove drive shaft. Remove exhaust pipe clamp from bellhousing and disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Disconnect manual shift linkage.
  3. Loosen 2 nuts and remove both clamps retaining cooler lines to transmission. Disconnect both cooler lines at transmission. Remove starter and lay alongside engine.
  4. Secure transmission jack under transmission. Remove ground strap and rubber exhaust hanger from crossmember. Raise transmission slightly and remove 8 bolts to remove crossmember. Disconnect speedometer cable.
  5. Pry hole cover off of bellhousing cover plate. Manually turn crankshaft and remove 6 torque converter bolts. Install guide pin in one hole of torque converter.
  6. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Pry on end of guide pin to move converter with transmission when separating from engine. Ensure that throttle cable and all electrical connectors are clear when lowering transmission.
