Steering Knuckle: Removal

  1. Remove disc brake caliper and front axle hub. Remove dust cover and oil seal. Disconnect knuckle arm from steering knuckle. Install bolt in drive shaft.
  2. Using feeler gauge, measure front drive axle thrust clearance between steering knuckle outside bushing and spacer. See DRIVE AXLE THRUST CLEARANC E table.

    Maximum .039 (1.0)
  3. If measurement is more than maximum clearance, replace steering knuckle outside and inside bushings. If measurement is within specification, go next step.
  4. Disconnect front shock absorber from lower control arm. Disconnect stabilizer bar from lower control arm. Remove snap ring and spacer. Remove cotter pin and nut from upper ball joint.
  5. Using Ball Joint Puller (09308-00010), disconnect steering knuckle from upper ball joint. Remove 4 bolts from lower ball joint. Disconnect steering knuckle from lower ball joint.
  6. Push lower control arm down and remove steering knuckle. Using dye penetrant, check steering knuckle for cracks or excessive wear. Pry out dust deflector.
  7. Using Oil Seal Puller (09308-00010), pull out steering knuckle outside bushing. Using brass bar and hammer, drive out steering knuckle inside bushing.
