- Loosen water pump pulley bolts. Remove all accessory drive belts. Rotate crankshaft so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Notch on crankshaft pulley must align with timing mark on timing belt cover. Remove oil filler cap from valve cover. Cavity in camshaft should be visible in hole. If not, turn crankshaft one complete revolution.
- Support weight of engine with floor jack. Remove engine mount through bolt from timing belt end of engine.
- Holding crankshaft stationary, remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley using gear puller. Remove timing belt covers and gaskets. Noting installed position for reassembly reference, remove timing belt guide from crankshaft.
- If reusing timing belt, place mating marks on timing belt and camshaft sprockets, and on timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. Also place arrow on belt indicating original direction of rotation.
- Loosen idler pulley (tensioner) bolt. See Figure. Move tensioner pulley as far left as possible and temporarily tighten bolt. Remove timing belt.
