22RE ENGINE ROUGH IDLE - HEAD GASKET LEAKS #2 CYLINDER
YEAR(S): 1985-89
MANUFACTURER: Toyota
MODEL(S): Truck
ENGINE: 22RE Four Cylinder Engine
ISSUE & TIP
A rough idle on a 1985-89 Toyota truck equipped with a 22RE four cylinder engine may be caused by a leaking head gasket. If you have found nothing after checking all of the basics like spark plugs, wires, and injectors, pressure test the cooling system.
If the cooling system pressure test reveals a pressure loss, remove the spark plugs and start checking for coolant inside the cylinders. Most of the leaks we have seen have been at the number 2 cylinder.
You can save yourself some time by asking customers with this problem if they've noticed a coolant loss or if they have had to add coolant on a regular basis.
