Description & Operation: Gauges

All models have an instrument cluster which includes a speedometer, temperature gauge and fuel gauge. The fuel gauge may also have a low fuel warning light. Some models are equipped with a tachometer, oil pressure gauge and voltmeter. A low brake fluid warning light is used on most models.

Gauges may be either the 2-terminal, bi-metallic type or 3-terminal, coil type. The 2-terminal type gauges are generally used on models without tachometers. Van models use a 3-terminal fuel gauge whether or not a tachometer is used. Testing procedures for the 2 types vary slightly. All sending units for gauges are the variable resistance type. On Supra models only, an optional trip computer may be included that calculates fuel economy, estimated time of arrival and distance remaining to destination.
