Wheel Bearing: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and brake drum. Remove 4 backing plate nuts. Using Axle Puller (09520-00031), pull rear axle from axle housing using care not to damage oil seal.
  2. Inspect axle shaft for maximum shaft runout of .059" (1.5 mm) and maximum flange runout of .004" (.1 mm). To remove inner bearing retainer of axle shaft, use grinder to grind down a side of retainer.
  3. Using a chisel and a hammer, cut off retainer and remove from shaft. Using an arbor press and Bearing Remover (09527-21011), press bearing from axle shaft. Using Seal Puller (09308-00010), pull oil seal from axle housing.
