Removal (MR2)

  1. Remove right-hand wheel assembly, under engine cover and A/C belt (if equipped). Loosen water pump pulley bolts and remove accessory belts. Remove spark plugs and oil filler cap. Rotate crankshaft (clockwise only), and align timing mark on crankshaft damper with pointer on cover.
  2. Look through oil filler hole and ensure cavity in camshaft is visible. See Figure. This ensures No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. If cavity is not visible, rotate crankshaft one complete revolution and recheck cavity location.
  3. Disconnect ignition coil wiring, brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hoses at intake manifold. Slightly raise engine with a jack. Remove right-hand engine mount assembly. Remove water pump pulley.
NOTE: Timing cover bolts are of different lengths and must be installed to original location. Mark bolts at removal.
  4. Using Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Remover/Installer (SST 09213-70010 and 09330-00021), remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Using Pulley Remover (SST 09213-31021), remove crankshaft pulley. Remove 10 bolts retaining upper, center and lower timing belt covers and remove covers. See Figure.
  5. Remove timing belt guide. Mark installed direction of timing belt and belt tooth-to-sprocket tooth, if not replacing timing belt. Loosen belt tensioner bolt and move tensioner away from belt. Tighten tensioner bolt to hold tensioner away from belt and remove timing belt.
