Timing Belt & Sprockets: Installation
- Loosen timing belt idler pulley mount bolt, move pulley as far left as possible and retighten bolt. DO NOT bend or twist belt. Install timing belt.
- If reusing old belt, align marks made during removal. Install belt with arrow pointing in direction of revolution. Release idler pulley and place tension on belt.
- If installing new belt, align crankshaft timing pulley and TDC mark on oil pump cover. Align camshaft sprockets and timing marks on cylinder head. See Fig 1. Release idler pulley and place tension on belt.
- Slowly turn crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise. Recheck timing marks. Measure belt tension between camshaft sprockets.
- Deflection should be .16" (4 mm), at tension of 4.4 lbs. (2 kg). See Fig 1. If tension is incorrect, readjust with idler pulley. Complete installation by reversing removal procedure.
NOTE:
Check the timing belt tension after installation.
- Ensure camshaft sprockets and crankshaft sprocket are clean and dry. Ensure all timing marks are in alignment. See Figure. Place timing belt tensioner far left and tighten bolt.
- Install timing belt. If reusing belt, ensure belt is installed to position marked at removal. Release tensioner and tighten bolt. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions (clockwise only). Recheck timing marks and camshaft cavity location.
- Measure belt deflection between both camshaft sprockets. Deflection should be 4.4 lbs. at .16" (2.0 kg at 4.0 mm). See Figure. If deflection is incorrect, readjust with tensioner. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
