Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . Remove camshaft covers. Remove upper timing belt covers. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprockets. Support timing belt so that it remains meshed with crankshaft pulley.

  2. To prevent head warpage or cracking, cylinder head bolts must be removed in correct order. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 3 stages in tightening sequence. See Fig 3. Lift head from dowels on block and set on wood blocks on work bench. If difficult to remove, pry with flat bar between cylinder head and block projection.

NOTE: DO NOT  damage cylinder head or block surface during prying operation.
