Removal & Installation: Camshafts: Removal

  1. Identify and remove all wiring and hoses interfering with camshaft cover removal. Remove spark plugs and wires. Remove camshaft covers and gaskets. Remove engine front covers, gasket and timing belt. Secure camshafts. Remove camshaft timing sprockets.
  2. Before camshaft removal, measure end play. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts in 3 to 4 stages, in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Figure.
  3. Keep bearing caps in order for reassembly reference. Remove camshafts and oil seals.
NOTE: The camshaft rides directly on cylinder head bearing surfaces and caps. There are no replaceable cam bearings in the head.
