Measuring Valve Clearance

  1. With engine cold, remove camshaft covers. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Check that lifters of No. 1 cylinder are loose and that lifters of No. 4 cylinder are tight. If not, turn engine 1 revolution.
  2. Using feeler gauge, measure No. 1 and 2 cylinder intake valve clearance and No. 1 and 3 cylinder exhaust valve clearance. Rotate engine 1 revolution and measure remaining valve clearances. If clearance is not as specified, change adjusting shim to adjust valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
