Removal & Installation: Valves

  1. Remove rocker arms. Using gasket scraper, remove carbon from valve head. Using wire brush, clean valve thoroughly. Inspect valves for worn, damaged or deformed valve head or stem.
  2. Check valve head margin thickness. On Camry and Celica engines, if valve head is worn to .020" (.50 mm) margin thickness for intake or .04" (1.0 mm) for exhaust, replace valve. On Celica GTS engines, if either valve head is worn to .020" (.50 mm) margin thickness, replace valve.
  3. Check surface of valve stem tip for excessive wear. On Camry & Celica engines, standard overall valve length is 4.319" (109.70 mm) for intake and 4.303" (109.30 mm) for exhaust. Valve stem and surface grinding limit is .020" (.50 mm).
  4. On Celica GTS engines, standard overall valve length is 4.0492" (102.850 mm) for intake and 4.0118" (101.900 mm) for exhaust. Valve stem end surface grinding limit is .028" (.70 mm). If valve stem tip is worn, resurface with grinder or replace valve.
