Valve Springs: Inspection
- Using steel square, check squareness of valve springs. On Camry and Celica engines, spring must be less than .079" (2.0 mm) out of square. On Celica GTS engines, spring must be less than .075" (1.9 mm) out of square. Check free length of spring and replace if not within specification.
- Using spring tester, check tension of each spring at specified installed height. On Camry and Celica engines, valve spring installed height is 1.555" (39.50 mm). Minimum installed tension is 67.9 lbs. (30.8 kg). On Celica GTS engines, valve spring installed height is 1.366" (34.7 mm). Minimum installed tension is 38.6 lbs. (17.5 kg). Replace spring if not to specification.
