Removal (Camry & Celica)

  1. Remove engine upper front cover (No. 2). Align camshaft oil seal retainer preset mark with center of hole with "E" stamped next to it on camshaft sprocket by turning crankshaft pulley clockwise until No. 1 cylinder is at 90 degrees BTDC on compression stroke. See Figure.
NOTE: If reusing old timing belt, draw arrow on belt in direction of engine rotation. Place match marks on crankshaft and camshaft sprockets and belt. Check belt for wear and contamination. If worn or contaminated, replace belt.
  2. Loosen No. 1 idler pulley mount bolt and shift pulley as far left as possible. Retighten mount bolt. Remove timing belt from camshaft sprocket. Use Camshaft Sprocket Holder (09278-54011) to hold sprocket and remove mounting bolt.
  3. Remove No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring. Secure crankshaft and remove pulley mount bolt. Using Pulley Remover (09213-31021), remove crankshaft pulley. Remove front lower timing belt cover and gaskets. Remove timing belt and guide.
  4. Remove No. 2 idler pulley. Remove crankshaft timing sprocket. If necessary, sprocket may be carefully pried off using 2 flat bars with cloth between bars and cylinder block.
