Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjusters: Inspection

  1. To check valve lash adjusters, bleed adjuster by immersing in light oil. Insert Valve Lash Adjuster Tester (09276-70010) into valve lash adjuster plunger hole. Slide plunger up and down several times while pushing on check ball lightly.
  2. If plunger stroke exceeds .020" (.50 mm), repeat step 1). If plunger stroke exceeds limit after repeated bleeding, replace valve lash adjuster.
  3. If valve lash adjuster plunger stroke is within specification, use a leak-down tester to check valve lash adjuster. Apply 44 lbs. (20 kg) of pressure to plunger and measure leak-down speed after plunger has moved approximately .08" (2.0 mm). Standard leak-down time is 2-7 seconds with a plunger movement of .04" (1.0 mm).
