Removal (Camry & Celica)

  1. Disconnect battery. Drain coolant. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect throttle cable with bracket from throttle body.
  2. Remove air cleaner, pipe and hoses. Disconnect alternator, wiring and bracket. Mark components for installation reference. Disconnect coolant temperature sending unit.
  3. Disconnect power brake booster vacuum hose. Disconnect A/C vacuum hose from dash panel (if equipped). Disconnect A/C idle-up hoses. Remove cruise control actuator vacuum hose from 3-way "T" fitting.
  4. Remove A/C compressor and power steering pump and lay aside (if equipped). Identify and disconnect emission control hoses and EFI wiring. Remove EFI wire harness out through right fender panel.
  5. Remove distributor assembly. Disconnect upper radiator hose and by-pass hose. Remove coolant outlet housing mount bolts, housing and gasket. Disconnect heater coolant outlet hose.
  6. Detach air hoses from air valve. Disconnect No. 2 coolant by-pass hose. Remove rear end housing mount bolts and housing with air valve and gasket. Disconnect heater coolant inlet hose. Detach No. 1 coolant by-pass hose. Remove clamps, heater pipe mount bolts, pipe and gasket. Disconnect fuel hoses.
  7. Raise vehicle. Drain engine oil. Disconnect intake manifold stay, power steering pump vacuum hoses and front exhaust pipe. Lower vehicle. Remove timing belt from camshaft timing sprocket.
  8. Remove No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring. Remove throttle body. Disconnect PCV hoses and remove valve cover and gasket. Loosen camshaft housing mount bolts gradually in 3 stages. See Fig 1. Camshaft housing warpage or cracking may result if housing bolts are removed in incorrect order. Remove camshaft housing with camshaft.

  9. Remove rocker arms and valve lash adjusters. Note locations for installation reference. Loosen and remove cylinder head bolts gradually, in 3 stages. Cylinder head warpage or cracking may result if head bolts are removed in incorrect order. See Fig 2.

  10. Lift cylinder head from dowel pins on block and place on work stand. If head is difficult to remove, carefully pry with bar between head and block projection. Remove intake manifold mounting bolts and intake manifold. Remove exhaust manifold mounting bolts, heat insulator and exhaust manifold.
