Installation (Celica GTS)

  1. Position new cylinder head gasket on cylinder block. Install cylinder head on gasket. Put a light coat of oil on threads and under heads of cylinder head bolts. Using Socket (SST 09043-88010) and torque wrench, install and tighten 10 cylinder head bolts in reverse order of removal sequence. See Figure.
  2. Install camshafts on cylinder head with No. 1 cam lobe facing outward. Install Seal Packing (08826-00080) to bearing cap No. 1. Install bearing caps on each journal with arrows pointing toward front and in numerical order from front side.
  3. Apply light coat of engine oil to bearing cap bolt threads and under heads. Tighten bearing cap bolts to specification in reverse order of removal sequence. See Figure. Check camshaft end play. See CAMSHAFT & CAMSHAFT HOUSING . Apply multi purpose grease to new oil seal lip. Using Driver (SST 09223-50010), install camshaft oil seal.
  4. Install No. 3 timing belt cover with 4 bolts. Install Nos. 1 and 3 timing belt cover. Temporarily install No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring. Install idler pulley to pivot pin.
  5. Pry timing belt idler pulley left as far as possible and tighten. Ensure tension spring is not out of pin groove. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
