Removal (Celica GTS)

  1. With cylinder head covers removed, remove spark plugs, No. 1 engine hanger, power steering oil reservoir tank, and camshaft timing pulleys. Remove No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring. Remove No. 3 timing belt cover. Check camshaft end play.
  2. Before camshaft removal, check camshaft end play. Standard end play is .0039-.0094" (.10-.24 mm). Maximum end play is .0118" (.30 mm). If clearance is greater than specification, replace camshaft and/or cylinder head.
  3. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence. See Figure. Remove camshaft bearing caps, oil seals and camshafts.
