Inspection (Celica GTS)
- Check camshaft runout. Using dial gauge, measure runout at center journal. Rotate camshaft and measure total runout. Maximum runout is .0024" (.060 mm). If beyond specification, replace camshaft.
- Using micrometer, check camshaft lobe height for excessive wear. Standard lobe height is 1.3980-1.4020" (35.51-35.61 mm). Minimum lobe height is 1.3937" (35.40 mm). If worn beyond specification, replace camshaft.
- Using micrometer, measure camshaft journals. Standard camshaft journal diameter is 1.0614-1.0620" (26.959-26.975 mm). Using Plastigage method, check camshaft housing bearing bores for excessive wear. Standard bearing-to-journal clearance is .0010-.0024" (.025-.062 mm). Maximum clearance is .003" (.08 mm). If clearance is more than specification, replace camshaft and/or housing.
