Inspection (Camry & Celica)

  1. With camshaft housing removed, measure cylinder head contact surface for warpage using a straightedge and feeler gauge. Maximum warpage is .0031" (.080 mm). If warpage is greater than specification, replace camshaft housing.
  2. Check camshaft runout. Using dial indicator, set pointer on center journal. Rotate camshaft and measure total runout. Maximum runout is .0016" (.040 mm). If beyond specification, replace camshaft.
  3. Using micrometer, check camshaft lobe height for excessive wear. Standard lobe height is 1.533-1.537" (38.93-39.03 mm). Minimum lobe height is 1.527" (38.78 mm). If worn beyond specification, replace camshaft.
  4. Using micrometer and telescopic hole gauge, measure camshaft journals and camshaft housing bearing bores for excessive wear. Standard bearing-to-journal clearance is .0010-.0026" (.025-.067 mm). Maximum clearance is .004" (.10 mm). If clearance beyond specification, replace camshaft and/or housing.
