Clearance Check
- Using valve guide brush and solvent, clean valve guides. Measure clearance between valve stem and guide with micrometer and telescopic hole gauge. Check diameter of stem at top, center and bottom. Insert hole gauge in guide bore and measure at center.
- Subtract highest reading of stem diameter from guide bore to obtain clearance. Maximum valve stem-to-guide clearance is .0031" (.080 mm) for intake and .004" (.10 mm) for exhaust. If clearance is beyond limit and valve stem is not worn, replace guide.
