Celica GTS

NOTE: Check or adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
  1. Remove valve cover. Turn engine to TDC of cylinder No. 1, on the compression stroke. Measure and record clearance between cylinders No. 1 and 3 exhaust valves and cylinders No. 1 and 2 intake valves. Turn crankshaft 360 degrees. Measure and record clearance of cylinders No. 2 and 4 exhaust valves and cylinders No. 3 and 4 intake valves.
  2. Compare measurements with valve clearance specifications. See ALLOWABLE VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If adjustment is required, turn crankshaft until camshaft lobe of valve being adjusted is straight up.
  3. Position lifter notch toward spark plug. Using Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248 70011), press lifter down. See Fig 1. Using a small screwdriver, pry up and remove adjusting shim.

  4. Using a micrometer, measure and record thickness of adjusting shim. Replace it with a shim of correct thickness to return valve clearance to specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
NOTE: Shims are available in 27 different thicknesses, from .079" (2.00 mm) to .130" (3.30 mm), in .002" (.050 mm) increments.
  5. Install adjusting shim and recheck clearance. Install valve covers.
