Front Pads: Installation

Using wooden hammer handle, push pistons into caliper bores. Slide new pads into caliper. Install anti-rattle spring and 2 retaining pins. Install anti-rattle clip, making sure to fit clip into holes in end of retaining pins. Check level of fluid in reservoir.

1. Install new pad support plate, pad guide plates and anti-rattle springs on torque plate. Push piston into caliper bore. Put new wear indicator on new pads. On Van models, wear indicator must be at bottom edge of outer pad. On all other models, wear indicator must be on upper edge of outer pad.
2. Install new brake pads, using new anti-squeal shim. Anti-squeal must go between piston and backing plate of brake pad. Remove bolt from top of torque plate. Lower cylinder slowly. Do not let piston dust boot wedge against edge of pads. Install cylinder mounting bolt and tighten to 14 ft. lb. (20 N.m). Check level of fluid in reservoir.

1. Install new pad support plates on torque plate. On Cressida models, put new wear indicators on upper edge of pads. Put new anti-squeal shims on outside of pads. On Pickup models, put new anti-squeal shim on back edge of outside pad.
2. On all models, install pads on support plates. Push piston into caliper bore, using wooden hammer handle. On Cressida models, install anti-squeal shim on piston face. Swing caliper down carefully to avoid wedging piston dust boot.
3. Make sure cap is in torque plate at end of main pin side. Push on center of cap to relieve air pressure around main pin. Make sure slide pin dust boot is in good condition. Pull on boot to relieve air pressure in bushing. Install and tighten lower slide pin to 65 ft. lbs. (88 N.m). Check level of fluid in reservoir.

1. Install new pad support plates on torque plate. Put new pad wear indicators on pads. Arrow on wear indicators must point in direction that rotor turns. Put new anti-squeal shims on pads. On MR2 models, cover both sides of No. 3 anti-squeal shim with disc brake grease.
2. On all models, install pads on support plates. Press piston into caliper with wooden hammer handle. Install caliper carefully so that piston dust boot does not wedge against brake pads. Tighten 2 mounting bolts to 18 ft. lb. (25 N.m). Check level of fluid in reservoir.
