Pinion Bearing Preload (All Others)

  1. Install drive pinion with rear bearing and front bearing into differential carrier. Install pinion flange and nut with light coat of grease on threads. Using a torque wrench, measure pinion bearing preload.
  2. Starting preload for new bearings is higher than starting preload for used bearings. See PINION BEARING PRELOAD table. Install differential in case. Install adjusting nuts. Align side bearing caps. Tighten side bearing cap bolts until spring washers are compressed.
  3. Tighten adjuster on ring gear side, using Adjuster (09504-00011) until ring gear backlash is .008" (.20 mm). Tighten other adjuster. Check ring gear backlash. Tighten or loosen adjusters equally until backlash is eliminated. Position a dial indicator against adjuster on ring gear side.
  4. Zero dial indicator. Tighten adjuster on other side until dial indicator starts to move. Tighten adjuster an additional 1-1 1/2 turns. Check ring gear backlash. Backlash should be .005-.007" (.13-.18 mm). If backlash is not as specified, loosen one adjuster while tightening other adjuster an equal amount until backlash is as specified.
  5. Tighten side bearing cap bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table in this article. Recheck ring gear backlash and pinion preload. Check tooth gear pattern. See GEAR TOOTH PATTERNS article in this section. If gear tooth patterns are not as specified, install correct washer behind rear bearing.
  6. Washer thickness are available from .0882-.1071" (2.24-2.72 mm). Remove companion flange. Remove front bearing. Install new spacer on drive pinion. Install front bearing. Install new oil seal. See PINION SEAL REPLACEMENT (ON-VEHICLE) in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION section of this article.
  7. Add pinion bearing preload for final pinion bearing preload. See TOTAL PRELOAD SPECIFICATIONS table in this article. Check pinion flange runout with a dial indicator. If longitudinal or latitudinal runout is more than .004" (.10 mm), bearings must be checked. Stake drive pinion nut. Install adjuster locks.
