Timing Belt & Sprockets: Removal

  1. Drain cooling system if necessary. On Corolla FWD models, cooling system component removal may not be necessary. Remove fan shroud (A/C only). Remove radiator and air cleaner assembly. Remove drive belts, fan, water pump drive pulley (3A-C) and valve cover with gasket.
  2. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke and check that No. 1 rocker arms are loose. If not, rotate crankshaft 1 turn. On 4A-C, remove crankshaft pulley No. 2 (power steering only). Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley.
  3. Remove upper and lower engine front cover mount bolts, gasket and covers. Loosen idler pulley mount bolt, position pulley at far left and retighten mount bolt. Remove timing belt.
