Rocker Arms & Shaft Assembly: Inspection

  1. Using dial indicator, measure inside diameter of rocker arm. Using micrometer, measure outside diameter of rocker shaft. Subtract rocker diameter from shaft diameter.
  2. Determine clearance. Standard rocker arm-to-shaft clearance is .0004-.0019" (.010-.048 mm). If clearance exceeds .0024" (.060 mm), replace rocker arm and/or shaft.
  3. Check cam end contact surface of rocker arm and valve contact surface of rocker arm adjusting screw. If worn excessively, grind or replace rocker arm and/or adjusting screw as necessary.
