Inspection (All Models)

  1. Clean all gasket material from top of block. Blow out carbon and oil from bolt holes. Using wire brush and gasket scraper, remove carbon and gasket material from combustion chambers, head and manifold surfaces. DO NOT  scratch or damage gasket contact surfaces.
    NOTE: DO NOT  clean cylinder head in a "hot tank" or it may be damaged.
  2. Using straightedge and feeler gauge, check head and block for warpage. Measure head on all 4 sides and diagonally. Measure block lengthwise across head bolt holes on gasket surface and diagonally.
  3. Maximum warpage on block side of head is .002" (.05 mm). On manifold surfaces, warpage limit is .004" (.10 mm). Maximum warpage of block is .002" (.05 mm). Maximum resurfacing limit is .004" (.10 mm). If warped beyond limits, resurface or replace cylinder head and/or block.
  4. Using a dye penetrant, check combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports, head surface and top of head for cracks. If crack is found, replace cylinder head.
