Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Identify and remove all wiring and hoses interfering with valve cover removal. Remove valve cover and gasket. Remove engine front covers, gasket and timing belt. Loosen rocker arm support bolts in 3 to 4 stages, in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Figure.
  2. Remove rocker arm assembly. Secure camshaft. Remove camshaft timing sprocket. Before camshaft removal, measure end play. Remove camshaft bearing caps in the following sequence: front, rear, front center and rear center.
  3. Keep bearing caps in order for reassembly reference. Remove camshaft and oil seal. Detach distributor drive gear mount bolt from camshaft and remove drive gear.
NOTE: The camshaft rides directly on cylinder head bearing surfaces and caps. There are no replaceable cam bearings in the head.
