Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Inspection

  1. Before removal, check camshaft end play. Standard end play is .0031-.0071" (.080-.180 mm). Maximum end play is .0098" (.250 mm). If clearance is beyond limits, replace camshaft and/or cylinder head assembly.
  2. Check for bend by placing camshaft in "V" blocks. Using dial indicator, set pointer on center journal. Rotate camshaft and measure total runout. Maximum bend limit for 3A-C is .0024" (.060 mm). On 4A-C and 4A-LC, bend limit is .10" (.004 mm). If beyond limit, replace camshaft.
  3. Using micrometer, check camshaft lobe heights for excessive wear. Standard lobe height is 1.5366-1.5370" (39.030-39.040 mm) for 3A-C with 4-speed transaxle and 1.5528-1.5531" (39.440-39.450 mm) for all others. Minimum lobe height is 1.5248" (38.730 mm) for 3A-C with 4-speed transaxle and 1.5409" (39.140 mm) for all others. If worn below limit, replace camshaft.
  4. Using micrometer, measure camshaft bearing journals. Replace camshaft if journals show nicks, scores or wear. Inspect cam bearing caps for flaking or scoring. If caps are damaged or excessively worn, replace head and camshaft.
  5. Check camshaft oil clearance, with camshaft and bearing caps tightened in place, using Plastigage method. DO NOT  turn camshaft during measurement. Maximum clearance is .004" (.10 mm). If clearance is beyond limit, replace camshaft and cylinder head.
