Front Calipers

There are 2 types of front disc brake systems used on Toyota vehicles. Sliding caliper type is 2-part assembly. Torque plate (pad carrier) is bolted to knuckle with 2 mounting bolts. Brake pads ride in torque plate. Caliper mounts to torque plate in 3 ways.

One version has fixed main pin extending from upper inside edge of torque plate. Upper mounting ear of caliper is fitted with sliding bushing which fits over main pin. Lower mounting ear also has sliding bushing. Mounting bolt is installed through lower sliding bushing and threads into torque plate to secure caliper. Celica, Corolla RWD and Supra models use this type of brake. See Fig 1.

Second version of sliding caliper has sliding bushings in both ears of caliper. Mounting bolts extend through sliding bushings and secure caliper to torque plate. Camry, Corolla FWD, MR2 and Tercel models use this type of brake. See Fig 2.

Third version of sliding caliper has 2 slide pins. Slide pins ride in upper and lower tubes on torque plate. Slide pins are threaded at head end and screw into caliper. Main slide pin rides directly in torque plate with cap over open end of tube. Sub slide pin rides in slide bushing, which fits into tube on torque plate. Cressida models use this type of brake. See Fig 3.
