Fitting Pistons

  1. With piston removed from crankcase, check cylinder bore for taper or out-of-round. If taper or out-of-round exceeds 0.008", cylinder bore must be bored to next oversize.
  2. Pistons and rings are available in oversizes ranging from 0.010" to 0.060" in 0.010" increments.
  3. Check piston-to-cylinder clearance. A 0.0012" feeler gauge should require 2.2-5.5 lbs. tension, measured on a spring tension gauge, to be pulled out from between piston and cylinder wall.

  4. Check ring side clearance in piston and end gap in cylinder bore (see specifications ). If side clearance exceeds specifications with new rings, replace piston. Install piston and rod assembly as previously outlined.
