Brake Fluid Bleed - One Caliper - Remove And Replace: Procedure

CAUTION: Brake fluid dissolves paint. Have clean towels and plenty of water standing by to wash spilled brake fluid off painted surfaces.
NOTE: Dispose of used brake fluid in a manner consistent with local environmental codes.
  1. Review the bleeder service tool profile.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See RAISE VEHICLE - 2 STANDS .
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See UNDERHOOD TRIM - REAR APRON ASSEMBLY - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  4. Remove the wheel for the caliper to be bled. See WHEEL ASSEMBLY - REMOVE AND INSTALL .
  5. Lower the vehicle to a working height.
  6. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See TOOLBOX 3 - CONNECT AND DISCONNECT .
  7. In Toolbox, type "bleed" into the search field and click Actions  .
  8. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir breather cap and remove the cap.
  9. Add clean brake fluid to the MAX level in the reservoir.
  10. Attach the pressure cap to the reservoir.
  11. Set the pressure to 30 PSI.
  12. Perform the rest of this procedure according to the caliper you are bleeding.
    • Front caliper - go to step  13.
    • Rear caliper - go to step  23
  13. Remove the caliper outer bleed valve cap and attach the catch bottle to the valve.
    NOTE: Hang the bottle by the wire hook, not by the hose.
  14. In Toolbox, start the task for the particular caliper.
    • For the front LH and rear RH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-L-REAR-R-BRAKE-BLEED(i) .
    • For the front RH and rear LH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-R-REAR-L-BRAKE-BLEED(i) .
  15. Open the outer bleed valve and watch the fluid as it flows out of the caliper.
  16. Use the crowfoot extension to close the bleed valve when the pump stops, or when clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper.
  17. Make sure that the reservoir does not go empty, or that the catch bottle does not overfill.
    CAUTION: If the reservoir goes empty, you must perform a complete brake system bleed. See BRAKE FLUID BLEED/FLUSH (MAINTENANCE) .
  18. Repeat step  16 through step  19 until clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper.
  19. Remove the catch bottle and install the bleed valve cap.
  20. Repeat step  15 through step  21 for the inner bleed valve, and again for the outer bleed valve.
  21. Tighten the bleed valves.

    18 N.m (13.3 lbs-ft) 

  22. Go to step  31.
  23. Remove the caliper bleed valve cap and attach the catch bottle to the valve.
    NOTE: Hang the bottle by the wire hook, not by the hose.
  24. In Toolbox, start the task for the particular caliper.
    • For the front LH and rear RH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-L-REAR-R-BRAKE-BLEED(i) .
    • For the front RH and rear LH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-R-REAR-L-BRAKE-BLEED(i) .
  25. Open the bleed valve and watch the fluid as it flows out of the caliper.
  26. Use the crowfoot extension to close the bleed valve when the pump stops, or when clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper.
  27. Make sure that the reservoir does not go empty, or that the catch bottle does not overfill.
    CAUTION: If the reservoir goes empty, you must perform a complete brake system bleed. See BRAKE FLUID BLEED/FLUSH (MAINTENANCE) .
  28. Repeat step  28 through step  31 until clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper.
  29. Remove the catch bottle and install the bleed valve cap.
  30. Tighten the bleed valve.

    10 N.m (7.4 lbs-ft) 

    NOTE: For Plus caliper, torque should be 14 N.m.
  31. Refill the reservoir to MAX, and properly dispose of the catch bottle contents.
  32. Remove the pressure cap from the reservoir and install the breather cap.
  33. Press the brake pedal several times to verify proper feel and action.
  34. In Toolbox, type "stiffness" into the search field and click Actions  .
  35. Run the IBST Stiffness Test - Burnished - Pressure test.
  36. If the Pressure_P100 value in the test results is less than 55 bar, repeat the bleed procedure from step  7.
  37. Install the wheel. See WHEEL ASSEMBLY - REMOVE AND INSTALL .
  38. Install the rear underhood apron. See UNDERHOOD TRIM - REAR APRON ASSEMBLY - REMOVE AND REPLACE .
  39. Remove the vehicle from the 2 post lift. See RAISE VEHICLE - 2 STANDS .
  40. Repeatedly press the brake pedal until firm.
  41. Perform a road test using a series of aggressive stops to make sure there is proper pedal feel and brake performance.
