Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Suzuki XL-7 and 2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Set parking brake. Turn ignition on and observe instrument cluster. If BRAKE warning light illuminates, go to next step. If BRAKE warning light does not illuminate, check Black/Blue and Black/White wires and IG-METER fuse between ignition switch and instrument cluster for open or short to ground. Repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  2. Disconnect SDM connector. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check electrical connection check mechanism. See Fig 1. If electrical connection check mechanism is in good condition, go to next step. If electrical connection check mechanism is not in good condition, repair or replace electrical connection check mechanism as necessary.
  3. Disconnect SDM connector. Check for proper connection between SDM connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire) and SDM. If connection is not okay, repair as necessary. See Figure. If connection is okay, reconnect battery and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and SDM connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). If voltage is more than 8 volts, substitute a known-good SDM and retest. If voltage is less than 8 volts, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect battery. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect 16-pin connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check connection at 16-pin instrument cluster connector terminal No. 7 (Blue wire) and repair as necessary. See Fig 2. If connection is okay, measure resistance of Blue wire between 16-pin instrument cluster connector terminal No. 7 and SDM connector terminal No. 2. If zero ohms is present, go to next step. If infinite ohms is present, repair open or high resistance in Blue wire.
  5. Reconnect battery and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and SDM connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). If 8 volts or more is present, repair short to voltage in Blue wire. If less than 8 volts is present, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect AIR BAG warning light bulb. If bulb is good, substitute a known-good instrument cluster and retest. If bulb is blown, replace bulb. Reconnect all components. Using scan tool clear DTC's. Go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTICS.
