Circuit Description
Evaporative (EVAP) emissions canister purge is controlled by a solenoid valve which allows manifold vacuum to purge canister when energized (purge on) by PCM. EVAP purge solenoid control is Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM), and is turned On and Off several times a second. Duty cycle (pulse width) is determined by engine operating conditions including load, throttle position, coolant temperature and ambient temperature. Duty cycle is calculated by the PCM and output is commanded when the appropriate conditions have been met.
EVAP purge vacuum switch is normally closed. EVAP purge vacuum switch is located in the purge line between EVAP canister and EVAP purge solenoid. EVAP purge vacuum switch will open when vacuum increases to 5 in. H2 O or more. PCM monitors EVAP purge vacuum switch signal to determine if evaporative emission control system is working properly. If switch is open (purge flow detected) when PCM is not commanding EVAP purge solenoid On, DTC P1441 will be set.
When DTC sets, PCM illuminates MIL on second trip after fault was detected. PCM will store conditions present when DTC was set as freeze frame data in the FAILURE RECORDS data.
PCM will turn MIL off on third consecutive trip cycle during which diagnostic runs and fault is no longer recognized. A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive trip cycles during which diagnostic runs and fault is no longer recognized. DTC can be cleared with scan tool, or by disconnecting battery voltage feed to PCM.
