Circuit Description

Ignition control circuit from PCM provides a zero or 5-volt signal to Ignition Control Module (ICM). ICM provides a ground path for battery voltage supplied to ignition coil. When PCM turns off 5 volt signal, ignition control module will remove ground path of ignition coil, causing magnetic field produced by ignition coil to collapse firing spark plug. PCM monitors circuit for open, short to ground or short to voltage, and will set DTC P0351 or P0352 if problem in ignition control circuit is detected.

When DTC sets, PCM illuminates MIL as soon as fault is detected. PCM will store conditions present when DTC was set as freeze frame data in the FAILURE RECORDS data.

PCM will turn MIL off on third consecutive trip cycle during which diagnostic runs and fault is no longer recognized. A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive trip cycles during which diagnostic runs and fault is no longer recognized. DTC can be cleared with scan tool, or by disconnecting battery voltage feed to PCM.
