Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Rodeo Sport and 2002 Isuzu Rodeo. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, see ENGINE CRANKS BUT WILL NOT RUN under NO START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  3. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Run engine at idle for one minute and check scan tool. If DTC P0201-P0204 has reset, go to step  5 . If DTC P0201-P0204 has not set, go to next step.
  4. Turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data and note parameters. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions. If DTC P0201-P0204 resets, go to next step. If no DTC is set, check for intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  5. NOTE: Gray 5-pin fuel injector test connector is located at right rear of valve cover. It can be identified by Blue connector lock.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel injector test connector. See Fig 1 . Connect Injector Test Light (J39021-45) to injector test connector. Crank engine. If Injector Test Light for suspect cylinder flashes, perform fuel injector coil test. See FUEL INJECTION under FUEL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If Injector Test Light does not flash, go to next step.
  7. If Injector Test Light for suspect cylinder was on steady in previous step, go to next step. If Injector Test Light was not on steady in previous step, go to step  10 .
  8. Disconnect PCM 32-pin harness connector for suspect fuel injector(s). Using test light connected to battery positive terminal, probe affected injector driver circuit at PCM harness connector. See Figure and Fig 2 . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  9 .
  9. Repair short to ground in suspect fuel injector driver circuit. After repair, perform OBD-II system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  10. Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. After repair, perform OBD-II system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  11. Disconnect 5-pin in-line fuel injector test connector. Turn ignition on. Connect test light to chassis ground and probe each terminal of injector harness connector (PCM side). See Fig 2 . If test light illuminates on IGN (+) terminal (Red/Blue wire) only, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step  12 . If test light illuminates on other terminals besides IGN (+) terminal, go to next step.
  12. Repair short to voltage in suspect injector driver circuit. See Fig 2 . After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  13. With test light still connected to ground, probe injector driver circuit (harness side). If test light illuminates on any terminal, go to step  11 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Using an ohmmeter, check for an open between ignition terminal of injector test connector (Red/Blue wire) and each of the other terminals of injector test connector. See Fig 2 . If continuity exists at all terminals, go to step  15 . If continuity does not exist at any terminal, go to next step.
  15. Repair open in injector drive circuit or injector. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  16. Check for an open in suspect injector control circuit between injector test connector and PCM harness connector. See Figure and Fig 2 . If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step  9 .
  17. Repair open circuit in suspect fuel injector circuit. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
