Diagnostic Procedure

- Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, observe Bank 1 HO2S-1 voltage parameter. HO2S voltage should change from bias voltage to fluctuating between 250-650 mV. If voltage parameter is as specified, check for intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If voltage parameter is not as specified, go to next step.
- Inspect O2 SENSOR (20-amp) fuse in underhood fuse/relay block. If fuse is blown, go to step 14 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect Bank 1 HO2S-1 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, probe Bank 1 HO2S-1 harness connector terminal No. 4 (Red/Blue wire). See Figure . If test light illuminates, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 7 .
- Connect test light between Bank 1 HO2S-1 harness connector terminals No. 3 (Black wire) and No. 4 (Red/Blue wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 8 .
- Allow HO2S to cool for at least 10 minutes. Using DVOM, measure resistance between Bank 1 HO2S-1 pigtail connector (component side) terminals No. 3 (Black wire) and No. 4 (Red/Blue wire). See Figure . Resistance should be 3-6 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to step 9 . If resistance is not as specified, go to step 10 .
- Repair open circuit in Red/Blue wire (HO2S ignition feed) between O2 SENSOR (20-amp) fuse in underhood fuse/relay block and Bank 1 HO2S-1. See Figure . If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Repair open in Black wire (HO2S heater ground circuit). After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Check for poor or loose terminal connections in Bank 1 HO2S-1 harness connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM White 32-pin harness connector. PCM is located under center console in front of shifter. Using DVOM measure resistance in White wire (HO2S high circuit) between Bank 1 HO2S-1 and PCM. See Figure . If resistance is .5 ohm or more, repair open circuit or poor connection as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If resistance is less than .5 ohms, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
- Check for poor or loose terminal connection at PCM harness connector C-2 terminal C15 (Red wire). See Figure . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check for poor or loose terminal connection at PCM harness connector C-2 terminal C14 (White wire). See Figure . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Replace Bank 1 HO2S-1. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Locate and repair short to ground in Red/Blue wire (ignition feed circuit) between fuse and Bank 1 HO2S-1. See Figure . Replace fuse as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
NOTE:
If engine has been operating, allow engine to cool for about 30 minutes before proceeding with diagnostic testing.
