Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Trooper. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Review and record scan tool FAILURE RECORDS data. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions. Using scan tool, monitor SPECIFIC DTC information for DTC P1404 until DTC P1404 test runs. If scan tool displays DTC P1404 FAILED THIS IGN, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTC P1404 FAILED THIS IGN, check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve 5-pin harness connector. EGR valve is located at right rear of intake manifold. Check for poor, loose or corroded connections in EGR valve and harness connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
- Remove EGR valve. Check EGR valve for excessive carbon deposits on EGR shaft. Check for foreign material inside EGR valve. If excessive carbon is found, go to next step. If excessive carbon is not found, go to step 6.
- Clean EGR valve shaft and inside EGR. Remove foreign material from EGR valve. Check for damage of pintle and seat. If severe damage is present, replace EGR valve. If damage is not present, go to next step.
- Reinstall EGR valve. Start and run engine at idle. Using scan tool, check EGR operation by using UP arrow to increase EGR from zero percent to 40 percent. If EGR operates, system is okay. If EGR does not operate, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, reset learned zero EGR valve position. Repeat test in step 6. If EGR operates normally, system is okay. If EGR does not operate normally, go to next step.
- Replace EGR valve. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- If system still does not operate after replacement of EGR, replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. Use scan tool to clear DTC and verify repair.
