Diagnostic Procedure

- Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- If any DTC other than P1133 or P1134 sets, diagnose affected DTC before proceeding. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no other DTCs are set, start engine and allow it to idle. Operate vehicle within CODE ENABLE CRITERIA . On scan tool, monitor DTC information. If scan tool displays DTC P1133 FAILED THIS IGN, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTC P1133 FAILED THIS IGN, check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- If DTC P1133 or P1134 is also set, go to step 12. If DTC is not set, go to next step.
- Check exhaust system for leaks. Check for leaking, misaligned or damaged gaskets. Check for loose or missing exhaust system nuts or bolts. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, repeat test starting in step 2. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check for misaligned, burned or corroded exhaust pipes. Check for leaks at exhaust manifolds. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, repeat test starting in step 2. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check that Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 is securely installed. Check for corrosion on terminals, for damaged wiring harness. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 4-pin harness connector. Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 is located in left exhaust pipe. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 (Pink wire). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 1 (Blue wire). Voltage reading should be 3-4 millivolts at both terminals. If voltage is as specified, go to step 10. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM Red 80-pin harness connector E-22. PCM is located at right rear of engine compartment. Check for damage to PCM pins or terminals. If a problem was found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem was found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to next step.
- Check for open, short to voltage or short to ground in HO2S signal circuits between HO2S and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to next step.
- Check for continuity between high and low signal circuits between PCM and Bank 2 HO2S No. 1. If continuity is present between high and low signal circuits, repair short as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem was found, connect PCM harness connector (leave Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 harness connector disconnected) and go to next step.
- Using scan tool, observe Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 voltage parameter. If voltage parameter is 425-475 millivolts, go to step 13. If voltage parameter is not as specified, go to step 14.
- Replace affected HO2S. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Replace Bank 2 HO2S No. 1. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. Use scan tool to clear DTC and verify repair.
NOTE:
Before replacing HO2S, check for fuel contamination, use of improper RTV sealant or engine oil and coolant consumption.
