Diagnostic Procedure

- Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read and record FAIL RECORDS data for DTCs P0351-P0356. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions. On scan tool, monitor DTC information. If scan tool indicates DTC P0351-P0356 FAILED THIS IGNITION, go to next step. If scan tool display is not as specified, check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Check ignition coils for poor, loose or corroded connections or damaged terminals. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check PCM harness connectors E-21 and E-22 for poor, loose or corroded connections or damaged terminals. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, reconnect any disconnected harness connectors and go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Backprobing at ION Sensing Module (ISM) harness connector, use DVOM to measure voltage between ground and specified ISM circuits. See CHECKING ION SENSING MODULE CIRCUITS table. See Figure. Voltage reading should be 25-55 millivolts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step 9.CHECKING ION SENSING MODULE CIRCUITS
Ignition Coil No. Harness Connector Terminal No. Wire Color 1 E-16/10 Red 2 E-16/2 Red/Black 3 E-16/8 Red/Blue 4 E-16/3 Red/White 5 E-16/9 Red/Yellow 6 E16/4 Red/Green - Start engine. Backprobing at ISM harness connector, measure voltage between ground and specified ISM circuits. See CHECKING ION SENSING MODULE CIRCUITS table. See Figure. If voltage toggles back and forth at least 20-50 millivolts within the range of 100-180 millivolts, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect ignition coil 3-pin harness connector. While cranking engine, measure voltage at suspect ignition coil harness connector terminal No. 1. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Voltage reading should be 200-1200 millivolts. If voltage reading is as specified, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, go to step 11.
- Replace suspect ignition coil. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 80-pin harness connectors E-21 (Blue) and E-22 (Red). PCM is located at right rear of engine compartment. Disconnect suspect ignition coil 3-pin harness connector. Check for a short to ground in ignition control circuit between PCM and ignition coil of suspect coil. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to next step.
- Check for a short to voltage in ignition control circuit between PCM and ignition coil of suspect coil. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to step 13.
- Check for a open in ignition control circuit between PCM and ignition coil of suspect coil. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 13.
- Repair open in ignition control circuit between PCM and ignition coil of suspect coil. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. Use scan tool to clear DTC and verify repair.
