Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Trooper. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Apply parking brake and increase engine speed to more than 1200 RPM for 2 minutes. Using scan tool, observe Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 voltage parameter. If voltage stays between 425 and 475 millivolts, go to step  4. If voltage varies above or below 425 and 475 millivolts, leave ignition on and go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Review and record FAILURE RECORDS data on scan tool. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions. On scan tool, monitor DTC information. If scan tool indicates DTC P0160 FAILED THIS IGNITION, go to next step. If scan tool display is not as specified, check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Check for damaged HO2S wiring harness. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 4-pin harness connector. Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 is located in left exhaust pipe after catalytic converter. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 harness connector. If problem is found repair or replace terminals as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem was found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
  6. Disconnect PCM Red 80-pin harness connector E-22. PCM is located at right rear of engine compartment. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 high or low signal circuit connections at PCM harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to next step.
  7. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 high signal circuit (Green wire) between PCM and HO2S. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit or poor connection. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
  8. Measure resistance of Bank 2 HO2S No. 1 low signal circuit (Blue wire) between PCM and HO2S. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open or poor connection. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  9. Using fused jumper wires, connect high and low signal circuits of Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 harness connector (PCM side) to ground. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor Bank 2 HO2S No. 2 voltage parameter. If scan tool display is 0-10 millivolts, go to next step. If display is not as specified, go to step  11.
  10. Replace Bank 2 HO2S No. 2. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  11. Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. Use scan tool to clear DTC and verify repair.
