Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Trooper. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Apply parking brake and increase engine speed to more than 1200 RPM for 2 minutes. Using scan tool, observe Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 parameter. If reading varies outside 400-500 millivolts range, turn engine off and go to next step. If reading does not vary outside 400-500 millivolts range, go to step  4.
  3. Turn ignition on. Review and record FAILURE RECORDS data on scan tool. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions. On scan tool, monitor DTC information. If scan tool indicates DTC P0134 FAILED THIS IGNITION, go to next step. If scan tool display is not as specified, check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Inspect HO2S harness for damage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair use scan tool to verify repair. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  5. Check for poor, loose or corroded connections in Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 harness connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check for poor, loose or corroded connection at PCM harness connector E-22 terminals No. 18, 58 and 17. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM Red 80-pin harness connector E-22. PCM is located at right rear of engine compartment. Measure resistance of Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 high signal circuit (Red wire) between PCM and HO2S. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit or poor connection. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step.
  8. Measure resistance of Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 low signal circuit (Green wire) between PCM and HO2S. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or poor connection. After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  9. Disconnect Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 4-pin harness connector. Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 is located in right exhaust pipe. Using fused jumper wires, connect high and low signal circuits of Bank 1 HO2S No. 1 harness connector (PCM side) to ground. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor HO2S voltage. If scan tool display is 0-10 millivolts, go to next step. If display is not as specified, go to step  11.
  10. Replace Bank 1 HO2S No. 1. Before replacing sensor, verify that cause of sensor failure has been corrected (fuel contamination, improper use of RTV sealant, excessive engine oil consumption, etc.) After repair is complete, see VERIFYING VEHICLE REPAIR  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  11. Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. Use scan tool to clear DTC and verify repair.
