Installation (Eclipse 3.0L & Galant 3.0L)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer, and 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
The camshaft sprocket (right bank) can turn easily due to spring force applied, be careful not to get your fingers caught when installing timing belt.
CAUTION:
Place autotensioner perpendicular to jaws of vice. If there is a plug at base of autotensioner, insert a plain washer onto end of autotensioner to protect plug.
CAUTION:
Never compress auto tensioner pushrod too fast, or it may be damaged.
NOTE:
When tightening timing belt tensioner center bolt, be careful that tensioner pulley does not turn with bolt.
- Place two blocks in a vice as shown, and place auto tensioner in vice. See Fig 1. Slowly compress pushrod of autotensioner until pin hole "A" in pushrod is aligned with pin hole "B" in cylinder. See Fig 2. Insert setting pin into pin holes once they are aligned. Install autotensioner to engine.
- Align timing marks on camshaft sprockets with those on rocker cover and timing mark on crankshaft sprocket with that on engine block as shown. See Figure. Install timing belt by following procedure so that there is no deflection in timing belt between each sprocket and pulley:
- Crankshaft Sprocket
- Idler Pulley
- Camshaft Sprocket (Left Bank)
- Water Pump Pulley
- Camshaft Sprocket (Right Bank)
- Tensioner Pulley
- Turn camshaft sprocket (right bank) counterclockwise until tension side of timing belt is firmly stretched. Check all timing marks again. Use Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley Adjuster (MD998767) to push tensioner pulley into timing belt, then temporarily tighten tensioner pulley center bolt. See Fig 3.
- Use Crankshaft Turning Tool (MD998769) to turn crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then turn it again clockwise until timing marks are aligned. See Fig 4. Loosen center bolt of tensioner pulley. Use Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley Adjuster (MD998767) and a torque wrench to apply tension torque to timing belt as shown. See Fig 5. Then tighten center bolt to specified torque. Remove setting pin that has been inserted into autotensioner. Turn crankshaft clockwise twice to align timing marks.
- Wait for at least 5 minutes, then check that autotensioner pushrod extends within standard value range. Standard value is 0.15-0.20" (3.8-5.0 mm). If not, repeat operation in step 4. Check again that timing marks of sprockets are aligned.
- Tighten right engine support bracket bolts in order shown. See Fig 6.
- Install NEW oil level gauge unit "O" ring. Lubricate crankshaft pulley bolt with engine oil before installation. Install NEW engine mount nuts.
- Adjust drive belt tension. See SERVICE INTERVALS & SPECIFICATIONS in SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS article.
- Clamp front engine mount so that arrow points in direction indicated. See Figure. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolt and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
