Installation (Eclipse 2.4L & Galant 2.4L)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer, and 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
Never compress auto tensioner pushrod too fast, or it may be damaged.
CAUTION:
DO NOT use a spanner or similar tool to turn Set Screw (MD998738). Otherwise, autotensioner set pin may be broken. Turn Set Screw (MD998738) by hand only.
- Install crankshaft position sensor. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. Use a press or vise to gently compress auto tensioner pushrod until pin hole "A" of pushrod and pin hole "B" of tensioner cylinder are aligned. See Fig 1. When holes are aligned, insert set pin. See Fig 2. Install autotensioner to engine.
- Align timing marks on camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and oil pump sprocket. See Figure. After aligning timing mark on oil pump sprocket, remove cylinder block plug and insert a Phillips head 0.3" (8 mm) screwdriver. See Fig 3. Check to be sure that screwdriver goes in 2.4" (60 mm) or more. If screwdriver will only go in 0.8-1.0" (20-25 mm) before striking counterbalance shaft, turn oil pump sprocket once, realign timing marks and check that screwdriver goes in 2.4" (60 mm) or more.
- The screwdriver should not be taken out until timing belt is installed. If timing belt is reused, install so that arrow marked on it at time of removal is pointing in clockwise direction. Install belt to crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket and camshaft sprocket in that order, so that there is no slackness in belt tension. Set tension pulley so that pin holes are at bottom, press tension pulley lightly against timing belt, and provisionally tighten fixing bolt. See Figure. Adjust timing belt tension.
- Remove rubber plug from rear of timing belt cover assembly. See Fig 5. Then screw in Set Screw (MD998738) by hand until tensioner arm is touching autotensioner pushrod. After turning crankshaft 1/4 of a revolution in counterclockwise direction, turn it in clockwise direction until timing marks are aligned.
- Clamp front engine mount so that arrow points in direction indicated. See Fig 4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolt and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
