- Start and warm engine until engine coolant temperature is 176-203°F (80-95°C). Turn lights and accessories off. Put automatic transmission in Park or manual transmission in Neutral.
- Connect scan tool to OBD-II Data Link Connector (DLC) located below instrument panel, to right of steering column (except Montero Sport) or left of steering column (Montero Sport). See Figure-Figure . Ensure ignition timing is correct. See IGNITION TIMING .
- Start engine and increase engine speed to 2500 RPM for 2 minutes. Check CO and HC levels at idle. CO level should be 0.5 percent or less and HC level should be 100 part per million or less.
- If CO and HC levels are high, check following items:
- Output of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- Normal closed-loop control (when closed-loop control is carried out normally, output signal of heated oxygen sensor changes between zero and 400 millivolts, and between 600 and 1,000 millivolts at idle).
- Fuel pressure.
- Injectors.
- Ignition coil.
- Spark plug cables.
- Spark plugs.
- EGR system operation and EGR valve for leak.
- Evaporative emission system.
- Engine compression pressure.
If results of check for all items are normal but CO and HC concentrations still exceed standard values, replace catalytic converter.
