Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If air bag diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If air bag diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe instrument cluster warning lights. If OIL and BATTERY warning lights come on, go to next step. If OIL and BATTERY warning lights do not come on, go to step 6.
- Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag connectors at base of steering column and behind glove box. See Figure & Figure . Disconnect SDM connector. See Figure. Install Driver/Passenger Air Bag Load Tool (09932-75010) to harness connectors. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect 16-pin connector. Measure resistance between SDM connector terminal No. 9 and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 7 (Yellow/Green wire). See Figure & Figure . If resistance is less than one k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is one k/ohms or more, an open or high resistance condition exists in Blue or Yellow/Green wire. Replace wiring harness and go to step 9.
- Remove and inspect AIR BAG warning light bulb. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is bad, replace bulb and go to step 9.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between SDM connector terminal No. 9 and ground. See Figure. If voltage is one volt or less, replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is more than one volt, a short to voltage exists in Blue or Yellow/Red wire. Replace wiring harness and go to step 9.
- Remove and inspect IG-COIL METER fuse. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, an open or high resistance exists in Black/White wire between ignition switch and instrument cluster. Replace wiring harness and go to step 9.
- Replace IG-COIL METER fuse. Turn ignition switch to ON position and wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect IG-COIL METER fuse. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to step 9.
- Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag connector at base of steering column and behind glove box. See Figure & Figure . Disconnect SDM connector. See Figure. Install Driver/Passenger Air Bag Load Tool (09932-75010) to harness connectors. Replace IG-COIL METER fuse. Turn ignition switch to ON position and wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect IG-COIL METER fuse. If fuse is okay, replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step. If fuse is blown, a short to ground condition exists in Black/White wire. Replace wiring harness. Replace IG-COIL METER fuse and go to next step.
- Reconnect all air bag system components. Using scan tool, clear all DTC's. Go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
